We will all be doing this when the money and/or cheap fuel runs out. Just look at Cuba after the fall of the USSR.
Homegrown food does taste so much better.
Gardening builds local communities. No one person or family can process a entire harvest at one time. Maybe you trade tomatoes for plum jam or eggs for a bushel of corn ears. You need to share. Who could be a better “trading partner” than your neighbors?
@Thompson – Indeed we will. I’m actually very interested in going to Cuba to see how they have done it. I’m sure there are many lessons to be learned from how they adapted.
